There are some Christmas events that are staples of the season – the panto, the Christmas market, the visit to Santa – and there are some that are a little less obvious but still fantastic fun. If you’re searching for something a little ‘outside the box’ to do this December, look no further. Here are five unusual Christmas events coming up in Bristol!
Winter Stargazing 3D, We The Curious
14 Dec–3 Mar
Discover the wonders of the night sky at the We The Curious Planetarium, the first and only 3D planetarium in the UK. This 45-minute show will transport you into the far reaches of the universe, showing you distant galaxies, strange new planets and the life cycle of stars. You will also learn about the constellations you can look out for during the festive season – a perfect way to spend those long winter nights.
Christmas at the Spiegeltent, Waterfront Square
23 Nov–20 Dec
The Spiegeltent is a luxurious party venue inside an enormous tent, complete with stained glass windows, a stage and a captivating draped ceiling. Over Christmas, Bristol’s Spiegeltent will play host to all sorts of wild parties, including club nights, cabarets, masked balls, banquets, theatre performances and family events. It’s one big Christmas party, and you’re invited!
Pick Your Own Panto, Bristol Improv Theatre
8 Dec–10 Dec
Have you ever wished panto was even more interactive than simply shouting, “It’s behind you!”? Well, thanks to Bristol Improv Theatre, now it is. Over Christmas the theatre will be running four shows, two for families and two for adults, in which the audience can decide what the characters get up to next. It’s all the fun of a regular panto, with a new story every night.
Victorian Christmas Weekend, SS Great Britain
8 Dec–9 Dec
If you want to experience Christmas as the Victorians celebrated it, travel back in time at the SS Great Britain. The ship and surrounding dockyard will be decorated for the season, and there will be activities for all the family, including a trail about old-fashioned Christmas traditions, card-making sessions and the chance to meet Victorian storytellers, including Brunel himself.
Santas on a Bike, Bristol City Centre
1 Dec
This year Santa is leaving his sleigh behind and kicking off the holiday season on his motorbike. That’s right, it’s the 14th annual Santa bike ride, in which dozens of motorcyclists don the big red costume and ride their bikes on a trail from Cribbs Causeway, through the city centre, and out to Wraxhall. Find a spot along the route and keep your eyes peeled for the team of riding Santas and their tinsel-covered bikes!
