It suits you perfectly, it keeps you safe and warm, and it makes you feel like you belong – if you think about it, your home is your perfect partner! So this Valentine’s Day, why not take the time to appreciate your home and really understand what it means to you? Here are five ways you can show your home some love this Valentine’s Day.
1. Buy it flowers
Flowers instantly liven up any room, so why not treat your home (and yourself) to a few bunches of fresh flowers? Some research has suggested that flowers can actually make us feel happier, so fill a few vases with your favourite varieties and place them in sunny spots around your home to give the space an instant lift. Bouquets work particularly well as table centrepieces, mantelpiece displays or in hanging baskets next to your front door.
2. Give it some TLC
We all have pesky little household jobs we just never get around to – like fixing a sagging curtain, cleaning the windows or giving the skirting boards a fresh coat of paint – so this Valentine’s Day, give your home the care it deserves and finally tick those jobs off your to-do list. Your home will thank you, and those annoying little problems will be a weight off your mind.
3. Have a cosy night in
You don’t have to spend a fortune on a fancy dinner or a night out for Valentine’s Day – you can celebrate at home, whether you have somebody to spend the evening with or not. If you’re spending the day with a partner, you could cook together or share a romantic bath. If you’re by yourself, light some candles, curl up under a blanket and really get cosy in your space. Your home is the perfect venue for a relaxing or romantic night in.
4. Rearrange the furniture
As with any relationship, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut with your home, and you might find yourself getting annoyed by things that have an easy solution – like the layout of the furniture. So take a step back and consider if your home is really working for you. Is there a small room you use all the time and a bigger one that is going to waste? Are you sitting in a dark corner when you could be nearer the window? Do you constantly bump into the same table or sideboard? You can give your home a fresh new look, for free, by rearranging the furniture and finding a new way to use the space.
5. Reflect on happy memories
Sometimes the best way to show appreciation to your home is simply to think about all the happy times you have spent there. We don’t usually do this until we are moving out of an old home, because we are so easily distracted by day-to-day life, but it can be very pleasant to sit quietly, or stand in each room, and remember the big decisions, exciting news, laughter and joy you have experienced there. Could there be a better Valentine’s tribute to your home than this?
