Christmas is coming and Santa is loading his sleigh – but is your property ready for his visit? We’ve created a checklist of essentials to help you make sure your property is winter-proof and Father Christmas-ready.
1. Clean your chimney
We all know Santa will get inside through the chimney, if you have one, so you’d better make sure it’s clean to avoid getting sooty footprints all over the carpet. Experts recommend that you have your chimney inspected and cleaned once a year – especially if you use your fireplace frequently. If you haven’t done it yet this year, add it to your to-do list for January – and for now, make sure you put your fire out properly on Christmas Eve!
2. Check your roof
It’s a good idea to regularly check the state of your roof – after all, the reindeer will need a safe place to land. Harsh conditions over winter – freezing temperatures, heavy rain and snowfall – can cause damage to your roof. You can make sure yours stays in good condition by giving it a visual inspection at least once a year, keeping drains clear, checking for leaks in roof spaces and attics, and calling in a professional right away to fix any problems you find.
3. Make it cosy
Santa may only be visiting for a short time, but he still appreciates a cosy home. Make sure yours is warm and welcoming, and that you’re not spending an unnecessary fortune on heating over Christmas, by making your property as energy efficient as possible. Simple solutions include fitting draught excluders to doors and putting up thicker curtains for the winter. If you’re prepared to make a bigger change, you can update the roof insulation, fit double glazing or invest in a more energy efficient boiler.
4. Add the finishing touches
Nothing says ‘Welcome, Santa!’ like Christmas decorations. A wreath on the front door, fairy lights in the window and a mince pie by the fireplace will make it especially obvious that you’re expecting a visit from the big man himself. And if you live in a rental property, you don’t have to miss out on the festive cheer – check out our tips for rental-friendly Christmas decorations.
