Cliftonwood runs down the hill from Clifton to Hotwells. It is an attractive area of Bristol that, like nearby Kingsdown, is surprisingly tranquil given the central location.

Iconic houses of Cliftonwood

The most common houses to be found in Clifton wood are towering Victorian terraces that make good family homes and student houses. The locals have a penchant for painting their abodes in bright colours. This adds character to an already charming corner of the city. Indeed, these colourful terraces are one of the iconic sights of Bristol.

Many of the houses have fabulous views across South Bristol taking in sights such as the Harbourside, SS Great Britain and the countryside beyond the city edges.

Community spirit in Cliftonwood

Cliftonwood has a strong community spirit. There are many events throughout the calendar in which to get involved: street parties, art trails and even an annual open air cinema.

There is only one pub in Cliftonwood: The Lion, but the area is well situated for residents to benefit from neighbouring parts of Bristol. The pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops of Clifton Village are a pleasant stroll up the hill, while at the bottom lies the Hotwells riverside which has its own share of eateries and watering holes.

Locals’ tip: The open-topped Grain Barge anchored on Hotwells Road is a great location for a drink in the summer. It serves tasty food too.

Student houses in Cliftonwood

As mentioned, the size of the houses lends them to making good student homes. The Bristol University Student Union is nearby which is convenient to students considering the area… and the main Bristol University buildings are about a 10 minute walk further along from the Student Union. Cliftonwood offers good access, too, for UWE students studying at Bower Ashton campus.

Workers will find Clifton and the Centre, as well as the University and Hospital buildings all within easy walking distance. However, anything further out may be quite a trek during rush hour.

Cliftonwood: A family neighbourhood

With the Harbourside in one direction and the attractions of Clifton in the other, there is plenty on offer nearby to keep kids occupied. It is also on the right side of town to provide easy access to Leigh Woods and Ashton Court for a bit of fresh air.
